"Achieving Rural Development using Neuro-Linguistic Programming" in 1995

Review by : - Dr. Dick McHugh

Every page of this book I experienced myself sitting back and saying to myself - “One of the best books on the practical application of NLP I have ever read!” Reading through the book I often paused to silently cheer for Mr. Arulraja and his clear, practical, explanations of the NLP tools. Mr. Arulraja explores our inside world, uses dreams and fantasy, and makes obvious how we set limits to our success. “We all live in the mental world of our own creation.” (page 72). He takes to task modern society and the different means used to demean labour and people occupied in these works. One important goal of NLP is flexibility and having choices in our behaviour. Almost every page of this book teaches people to experience this goal and to start using it in daily experience. Getting people to own their own responsibility is a major goal in NLP and Mr. Arulraja never misses an opportunity to emphasize this principle and get his clients to learn how to do it. His motto is “Pursue Success Straight Away!” (page 137). Don’t be problem solvers, he says; rather, “Create a very conducive environment for people to grow and succeed.” (page 137). He encourages people to model success as the founders of NLP did and he holds strong the NLP teaching that “all needed resources are inside.” (page 138) Creatively, he leads his clients and readers to build success, first in their imagination, and then, shakes them up from their stupor to a wakeful state and makes them see reality better. (page 146) To get power and responsibility in our own hands again, he uses the well-known tool of NLP, called ‘chunking down.’ Over and over he explains how to chunk down our ideas, experiences and plans. Citing powerful examples from all over the world, he makes strong case that it is possible to change behaviour by changing our assumptions. As NLP stresses the importance of working on our minds, Mr. Arulraja explains how to do this and how to use our imagination and dreams to change our mindset, with simple examples of his work in the village. I also learned how I failed at first as a headmaster of a High School for Adivasis in Bihar - now Jharkhand! Right from the Introduction, he situates the arena of NLP to be in the minds of the people. “We operate not on the world directly but on the maps we carry in our heads about the world.” (page 6). The NLP community can be proud of this book. It does in practice what we, of the NLP community, say is so important: make the language easy for all. There are no big terms used! Mr. Arulraja uses all the concepts of NLP without the difficult words. He does not teach NLP; but applying all the ideas of NLP to the concrete situations in the village, he does it in practice. The book makes you dream of success and you as a successful person. The author is so clearly outcome-oriented that you will realize by experience how NLP gets you to trust yourself from beginning to end. You readers are in for a wonderful experience of NLP just by reading this book!

All the best,

When I received Mr. M.R.Arulraja’s “Achieving Rural Development Using Neuro Linguistic Programming”, I had imagined it to be one of those scholastic and theoretical books with little or no practical value. After going through it, I was in for a pleasant surprise. Having worked with farmers throughout my life, I found the book to be very engrossing and enriching with a lot of practical tips. Mr. Arulraja has demonstrated that it is possible to bring about rural transformation, given the will. What is needed is a change in the mindset. Using a psychological tool - Neuro Linguistic Programming - Mr. Arulraja has effectively proved that it is possible to address the challenges arising from the mind. I am sure that this book would be of immense help to policy makers and those who work with the rural poor. Mr. Arulraja believes that the poor have only one way to survive and to flourish and that is through cooperation. He says, “If what we need is cooperation, we should be studying Amul Dairy as compulsory subject in schools. Let us fill ourselves with faith in cooperation. ... For cooperation alone can enable us to live honourably in future”. He says cooperation is no more a luxury we can live without; it is a condition to survive, thrust by the changing world order today. It is this faith in cooperation that helps him to prepare a blueprint for rural development. Throughout the book through anecdotes, illustrations and case studies, Mr. Arulraja has demonstrated that it is possible for ordinary people to use their minds as winners do and achieve results like them. The 10 steps he proposes in the concluding part for leading people to achieve dream-led development are not only practical, but would be of immense help to any practitioner of rural development. He demonstrates that dream-led development is attainable, provided we give power to the people themselves. A must read for anyone interested in rural development. I am sure this book will prove invaluable to anyone interested in working with our rural people and ensuring that they find their rightful place under the sun.
